SeaTrack VMS

      Vessel Monitoring System

Why do you need SeaTrack VMS?

SeaTrack Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) is an application for remote monitoring of vessels for fisheries and management purposes, and vehicles too. It provides real-time graphical updates of vessel locations on a computerised map, with easy access to each target by a simple point and click mouse action. Behind each vessel is a database record and a complete position database.

 * SeaTrack VMS has the following key features:

  • Polling and receiving of position reports from vessels.
  • Display of vessel locations with speed/direction vector on a geographical map.
  • Display of detailed vessel travelling information in tabular form.
  • Display of location history and tracks.
  • Send and receive low cost text messages to/from vessels.
  • Access to all information for each vessel by simple point and click operation.

SeaTrack VMS keeps track of a large number of vessels, which report automatically or manually via Inmarsat-C communication system.

  What is Inmarsat?

Inmarsat is an internationally owned, 81-country co-operative that provides mobile satellite communications worldwide. Established in 1979 to serve the maritime community, Inmarsat has evolved to become the only provider of global mobile satellite communications for commercial, distress and safety applications at sea, in the air, and on land. Some of the markets served by the Inmarsat system are: merchant shipping; fisheries; airlines and corporate jets; land transport; oil and gas; the news media; and business people who travel beyond the reach of conventional communications.

Inmarsat-C is one of the Inmarsat services and provide a low-cost satellite messaging and data communications means for those who are always on the move. The Inmarsat-C terminal uses specific store and forward protocol and operates at an information rate of 600 bits per second. Inmarsat-C also supports 2-way messaging exchange such as e-mail to telex and e-mail to fax.

 * Applications

  • Broadcasting and Weather Forecast
  • Data Reporting and Polling
  • Global Position Reporting
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  • The shipboard terminal is equipped with a distress and safety device to facilitate the reporting of a vessel's latest position.
  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
  • It is including the monitoring of river levels, weather information-gathering and oil pipeline supervision.

  How does SeaTrack work?

 * SeaTrack Vessel Monitoring System includes following segments:

  • Ships equiped Inmarsat-C stations with polling and reporting facilities.
  • Inmarsat satellites.
  • Kumsan Land Eart Station (LES).
  • SARACOM VMS server (Pusan, Korea).
  • SeaTrack VMS land user's terminal - SeaTrack application based on personal computer with Windows'98 platform, connected with SARACOM VMS server via Internet e-mail circuits.

If the Control Center VMS system established Internet access, then it will be able to provide some kinds of ship request and receive reports. These all provide with special e-mail messages.

 * The Control Center can request (by sending polling commands):

  • The position reports of selected ship.
  • The position reports of all or set of selected vessels.
  • The position reports of all vessels within a certain circular or rectangular area.
  • The periodical automatic position reports of vessels for a given interval (program report schedule).

Also the Control Center can send short low cost messages and normal e-mail messages to ship.

The ship will answer automatically on request by sending position reports which includes position (geographical co-ordinates), course, speed and some other data.

Also the ship radio-operator can manually send to Control Center the position reports and e-mail messages.
